A NOTE TO INCOMING INSTRUMENTAL STUDENTS
Welcome to Millikan High School and the Instrumental Music Program. We provide many opportunities to perform and many performing groups to participate in. The more groups you participate in the more fun you will have.
The Marching Band will meet the last two weeks of August. 2009-2010 drum majors, Kevin Barnett and Nicole Butler, will attend the George Parks Marching Academy this summer at the University of Redlands to help them prepare for another outstanding Ram Marching Band year. The percussionionists will meet the second week in August. The new drum coach will audition the new drum line at this time. The marching band will perform at the UCLA band day, three tournaments, Disneyland, two parades, football games and many other events in the fall. Band camp is from 8-12 in the fall. In camp we learn the music with the help of our outstanding coaches, learn to march and have a lot of fun! This is a great way to get to know the campus and many students before school starts. We end camp with our annual beach party. Join us!!!
The Jazz Band and Combo will begin with auditions in September 2009. We will have a lot of new charts ordered for the New Year. This last year we will travel to Reno, Nevada to participate in the Reno Jazz Festival. We will be performing at many Jazz festivals and of course we will host the Millikan Jazz showcase. We have Tom Mitter a professional Jazz performer and educator from Chicago, IL. His specialty is jazz improv and he helps us to learn to improve. It will be an exciting year of Jazz!
The Orchestra and Symphonic Winds in Spring of '06 traveled to Boston. We performed at Boston‘s Symphony Hall. What a wonderful experience!! Auditions for chairs in Orchestra will take place in the fall of 2009. We have a limited number of cellos, bass’s, violas and violins and an abundance of students who will audition for these spots. I encourage you to begin private lessons this summer if you are not already doing so. Incoming freshman that would like to be in Symphonic Winds in the fall may audition for me at Millikan on Friday, June 5, 2009 from 3 to 5 in the Millkan band room 505. Phone for an audition time 425-7441 x4142.
I look forward to meeting each one of you and hope you spend the summer practicing and preparing yourself for an outstanding 2009-2010 school year. The best thing you can do to prepare is to study privately!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely,
Bonnie L. Annes
